How margin.wtf actually works, in plain terms.

What is this

margin.wtf is a trading front end for Lighter, a real order-matched perpetual futures exchange running its own instance on Robinhood Chain. It is not a Bucket-Shop-operated exchange, does not hold an order book itself, and does not custody your funds. Every order placed here is submitted directly to Lighter and filled by Lighter's own real market participants.

Bucket Shop is a registered integrator on that Lighter instance. Trading here routes your order through Bucket Shop's integrator account so a small share of the trading fee you'd pay anyway funds Bucket Shop's own token distributions, at no extra cost to you — the fee comes out of Lighter's own fee, not on top of it.

Markets

Five tokenized-stock perpetuals, each margined and settled in USDG. All trade 24/7, including weekends and outside the underlying stock's own real market hours — same as any crypto perpetual, decoupled from the stock market's own open/close.

Mark price, funding rate, and 24h stats shown on the trade page are read live from Lighter, not from an oracle or a synthetic feed. The order book panel shows real resting orders currently on Lighter for whichever market is selected.

Opening a position in a market and direction you already hold a position in adds to it — Lighter nets same-market, same-direction orders into a single position rather than opening a second one. The trade button says Add to Long/Short when that's what a click will do.

Fees

You pay Lighter's own real trading fee on every fill — the same fee you'd pay placing the same order directly on Lighter's own app. Routing through Bucket Shop's integrator partnership doesn't add a markup; it redirects a share of that same fee to fund Bucket Shop's distributions instead of it going elsewhere.

There's no separate margin-hold fee, no funding-rate markup, and no withdrawal fee charged by margin.wtf itself. Lighter's own funding rate (shown live per market above the chart) applies the same way it would on any perpetual.

Custody & keys

margin.wtf is non-custodial. Your funds live in your own Lighter account, controlled by your own wallet — Bucket Shop never holds, touches, or has withdrawal access to your balance at any point.

How the session key works. The first time you connect a wallet, this page generates a fresh Lighter API keypair entirely in your browser and asks your wallet to sign a registration for it. That key is held only in this browser tab's sessionStorage — cleared the moment you close the tab, never sent to any Bucket Shop server, never written to disk. It's used to sign order placement and withdrawals for the rest of the session, so you're not prompted by your wallet for every single trade.

There's no seed phrase involved anywhere in this flow, and this key can only ever place/close orders and withdraw to the L1 address it was registered under — it can't be used to move funds anywhere else.

Closing the tab (or clearing site data) ends that session. Reconnecting generates a new session key the same way — a one-time signature, same as the first visit.

Placing a trade

  1. Connect a wallet. Any injected wallet or WalletConnect. If the connected address has no Lighter account yet, you'll be pointed to Lighter's own app to create one and deposit real funds — that first deposit is the one step this page doesn't handle itself.
  2. Set up trading. One wallet signature, generates and registers the session key described above.
  3. Approve the integrator. One more signature, authorizing Bucket Shop's integrator account to receive its fee share on your trades. Both this and step 2 only happen once per session.
  4. Pick a market and direction, set margin and leverage, place the order. Market orders fill immediately against Lighter's real order book at the best available price; limit orders rest on the book until filled (the Mark/Mid buttons quick-fill a starting price). Check TP/SL to submit a take-profit and stop-loss alongside the entry, as one grouped order. Est. liquidation price updates live as you adjust the inputs.
  5. Manage the position. The Positions table below the chart shows real entry, current price, live PnL, and liquidation price. Add to a position with the + button, or close it fully or partially by entering any amount up to its current value.

Getting funds out

Closing a position settles its margin and PnL back into your Lighter account's own USDG balance — it does not automatically return to your wallet. That balance stays on Lighter, available to back new trades, until you explicitly withdraw it.

The Withdraw button next to your available balance (above the Positions table) sends your full available USDG balance straight to the wallet you're connected with — it's the only destination it can go to, since Lighter only ever withdraws to the L1 address registered to the account. No separate address entry, no extra fee charged by margin.wtf.

Risk

Perpetual futures are leveraged derivatives. You can lose more than your initial margin. Positions are liquidated automatically, without further notice, when maintenance margin is breached — leverage magnifies both gains and losses. Tokenized-stock perpetuals track the underlying asset's price but are not shares of the underlying company, carry no dividends or voting rights, and can trade at a different price than the real listed stock, particularly outside its normal market hours. Nothing on this page or on margin.wtf is financial, legal, tax, or investment advice.
